Why Are My Teeth Stained

Have you ever felt as if your smile appears dingy, dull, and discolored? You are definitely not alone. Americans spend more than a billion dollars a year on whitening products because they are unhappy with the color of their teeth. Wouldn’t it be better if we could understand what causes this in the first place, and take steps to prevent it?

Here are some common causes that lead to staining and discoloration:

Tobacco:

Using tobacco products, including cigars, cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco will cause your teeth to discolor over time. These products contain ingredients like nicotine and tar that are proven to cause stains. Therefore, when tobacco is consistently being placed in the mouth, you will eventually notice brown spots and yellowing of your teeth. The best way to prevent this is to avoid tobacco altogether. If you aren’t ready to give it up, make regular dental cleanings and professional teeth whitening a part of your normal routine.

Foods and beverages:

Our diet is often another reason our teeth become discolored. Think about what would stain a white shirt — beverages such as tea, coffee, red wine, and soda; and food such as red pasta sauce, beets, and berries. Food and beverages that are highly acidic attack our enamel and make it appear yellow, gray, or dull. Consuming a lot of sweet treats causes decay which often presents as dark spots. To lessen the chance of discoloration from foods and beverages, enjoy them in moderation.

Trauma:

The color of a tooth can change over time when it is the result of trauma. If you are involved in a car accident, experience a fall, or a sporting accident that causes an injury to your mouth, you may experience discolored teeth as the result. This can happen to more than one affected area at a time. If you have a tooth that starts to become darker over time, try to remember if there could have been a mouth injury associated with the tooth.

Poor Oral Hygiene:

Poor oral hygiene is another common cause of discoloration. Plaque builds up every day, allowing stains to form more easily when we do not take steps to remove it. Brushing and flossing every day will help protect against decay, as well as, help to remove the buildup that causes a gray or yellowish appearance over time.

Overall, the best way to ensure your smile is as bright and beautiful as it can be is to visit your dentist every six months for a professional cleaning.
