Which Type Of Toothbrush Is Right For Me

Oral hygiene is essential for your overall well-being, not just your oral health. Gum disease is a major risk factor for developing certain health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Brushing regularly the best method for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. However, how do you know which toothbrush is best to use?

There are specific features to look for in a toothbrush, regardless whether it is powered or manual. The variety of styles, sizes, and shapes of toothbrushes can make choosing the right one overwhelming. Here are some things to consider when shopping for your next toothbrush.

Power versus manual

According to a consumer report published in 2015, electronic toothbrushes remove 21% more plaque than manual brushes. They clean teeth and gums better than a manual brush because the head of the brush moves in a fast motion. However, electronic brushes can add up which can be anywhere from $20-$200, and you’ll need to consider purchasing brush heads every three months. If using a manual brush, you will need to do a little work to generate that circular and back and forth motion necessary to clean your teeth and gums properly.

Bristle options

Manual brushes or replacement heads for your electric brush are available with hard, medium, or soft nylon bristles. A brush with soft bristles is the best kind to use. Hard or medium bristles can damage the enamel, root surface, and gums. This also depends on how vigorously you brush your teeth.

Likability

The best toothbrush for you is going to be the one you're most likely to use -- and use well. Some people may not like the vibrating feeling of a powered toothbrush. Others might find an electric variety easier to use to clean all tooth surfaces. This may be especially true for people with conditions that limit mobility, such as arthritis or carpal tunnel. If you enjoy using your toothbrush, you are more likely to brush for the recommended length of time of two minutes. Some powered varieties even have a built-in timer to let you know when you have devoted enough time to brushing.

It is ultimately your personal preference on which type of brush you wish to use. Electric and manual toothbrushes are effective at cleaning teeth if you use proper technique and brush for the recommended time.
